Propagation Services – Prediction Charts Do\u00a0What it Says on the Tin. \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The value of propagation prediction services\u00a0was illustrated\u00a0this morning. \u00a0The net\u00a0started off on 80 Meters with good quality audio via the internet and software defined radio receiver at Hack Green in Cheshire. \u00a0All signals were readable quality so reports were five and nine with the exception of G3XWD who was slightly more difficult to read. \u00a0I could hear my own signal coming back at good quality.<\/p>\n

QSY<\/strong><\/p>\n

At 8AM\u00a0the net normally changes frequency (QSY) to 60 Meters (5Mhz) (mid way through the recording above) Just before going I reviewed the propagation prediction\u00a0the frequency where\u00a0we were heading.<\/p>\n

The chart above\u00a0was showing me that while conditions on 80M ((3.8 Mhz) were reasonable at our ranges, \u00a0On 60 Meters (5.3Mhz) –\u00a0normally quite good at this range and time of day, it would clearly not\u00a0support the net this week.<\/p>\n

The chart is created\u00a0from data from ionospheric sounders (Ionosondes) that tests\u00a0\u00a0the F2 Layer of the ionosphere across a range of radio frequencies. \u00a0This layer\u00a0reflects high angle signals back to earth when it is sufficiently ionised. \u00a0The data are used to\u00a0predict the next few hours. \u00a0(With thanks to IPS Radio and Space Services<\/a> the Australian Government Propagation Service.)<\/p>\n

We changed frequency and it\u00a0was precisely as predicted. \u00a0Signals were difficult between here and G3WOV in Yorkshire but nothing heard from those stations in between.<\/p>\n

We reverted to 80M and closed the net at 8:20.<\/p>\n
